How long would you take?

Karl Bushby’s route home is about 50,000 km. Tell us roughly how much you walk and we’ll work out how long the same line would take you — with no visas, bans, oceans or pandemics in the way.

A rough average for adults is around 70–80 cm. Measure ten steps and divide by ten for your own.

    The waiting game

Counting every calendar day from 1 November 1998 to Dover on 5 October 2026 — including years stuck waiting for visas, sponsors and open borders — Karl’s line moved forward an average of only about 4.9 km a day.

That’s roughly 6,400 of your steps a day. The walking was the easy bit; ExplorersWeb counted only about 13 years of actual walking in the first 26.
