Odd ones out

  • Ytterby, a single village in Sweden, gave its name to four elements: yttrium, terbium, erbium and ytterbium.
  • Eleven symbols don't match their English names because they come from older Latin names (or, for tungsten's W, the German "wolfram"): Na, K, Fe, Cu, Ag, Sn, Sb, W, Au, Hg and Pb.
  • Only two elements are liquid at room temperature: mercury and bromine — the "Br" in Breaking Bad.
  • Helium was spotted in the Sun's spectrum in 1868, decades before it was found on Earth.
  • Technetium (1937) was the first element made artificially; its name means "artificial".
  • Oganesson (118) is named after Yuri Oganessian — one of only two elements named after someone alive at the time.
