The alphabet that draws your mouth

Most alphabets evolved by accident. Hangul was designed — and its designers wrote down the rules in 1446. Here they are, letter by letter.

1 · Five shapes from the speech organs

Tap a letter. Then say its sound and feel where your tongue, lips or throat go.

2 · Add a stroke, add some force

Each base letter grows a family. One more stroke means a stronger or breathier sound made in the same place. Dashed: the rebel ㄹ. Faded: a letter that's no longer used.

3 · The vowel kit: heaven, earth, human

Every vowel is built from three symbols. Tap them in order to build vowels — the dot goes where you tap it. Can you find all 14?

Try: Human, then Heaven.

4 · The four lost letters

Sejong's alphabet had 28 letters. Today's has 24 basic ones. These are the four that faded away.

5 · The full chart

All 19 initial consonants and 21 vowels used today. Tap any letter for its name, sound and memory trick.
