Sixty Years Onstage
Most of the world met him on the bridge of a starship at 47. By then Patrick Stewart had already spent more than twenty years as a classical actor, and he spent more of his career on stage than on any set. Here is the life, from Mirfield to Broadway.

The Timeline
The man behind the captain
Stewart wrote and spoke openly about growing up with a father who was violent towards his mother, and about learning, from the TV series Who Do You Think You Are?, that his father had probably been living with untreated shell shock from the Second World War. He became a patron of the domestic-abuse charity Refuge, supported the veterans' mental health charity Combat Stress and served as an ambassador for the International Rescue Committee.
"Going around with Patrick is like going around with the pope," Ian McKellen once said. "Not that people genuflect, but he's touched so many lives."
