Monday 2 November 2026 · Día de los Muertos

Light the way home.

Tonight, families across Mexico and beyond welcome back the souls of the people they love. Build an ofrenda for someone you miss, whether it's a grandparent, a friend, a pet or a hero. Fill it with marigolds, candles and the things they loved, then light the candles and share it.

Why today

The night the souls come home

In the Día de Muertos tradition, the dead return for a short visit each year. In many places 1 November is for angelitos, the children, and 2 November is for adults. Families clean graves, cook the favourite dishes of the people they've lost and build an altar at home so the visitors know they are remembered.

UNESCO added the "Indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead" to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2008. It blends pre-Hispanic rites with Catholic All Saints' and All Souls' days. It isn't "Mexican Halloween". It is a celebration of memory, and it's often a joyful one.
