Taller de papel picado
Papel Picado Workshop
Papel picado ("pierced paper") flutters over every ofrenda and stands for the wind, one of the four elements on the altar. Artisans in San Salvador Huixcolotla, Puebla, chisel through stacks of tissue paper. Here you fold one sheet, cut it, and unfold the surprise.
Folded in 8. Cuts go through every layer.
1 · Fold
Changing the fold keeps your cuts, but they'll mirror differently.
2 · Paper
3 · Cut
Tip: shapes that cross a fold line join into one big symmetrical hole. That's where the magic is.

The real craft
Traditional papel picado is cut from stacks of up to dozens of sheets at once with hammers and chisels, following a drawn template. Puebla declared San Salvador Huixcolotla a cultural heritage site and the birthplace of papel picado on 22 September 1998. The sheets hang in rows over altars, streets and graves, and their constant movement in the wind is a reminder of how fragile and joyful life is.
At home, the folding-and-scissors method you're using here is how many families and schools make their own.
